Founded in 2300 BC, Babylon was a city set upon the banks of the Euphrates River with tributaries flowing through an arid region about 60 miles south of Baghdad in present-day Iraq. It was a center of commerce; its location, nearly as important as the city itself. Ancient Mesopotamian trade routes ran to the Mediterranean Sea, and there were areas to the east and north where Babylon had strong economic ties. Babylon thrived on diverse trade in both goods and ideas — the ancient equivalent of the Internet. The city exemplified humans’ ability to make the most of what was at hand — the only available resources were good soil and water from the river, and Babylonians took advantage of them (Arkad Club aims to do the same in Blockchain). Constructed over centuries, it was one of antiquity’s most impressive cities. It was the center of civilization, with a highly developed culture that promoted the arts and sciences and was also the cradle of early mathematics. The city attracted merchants from around the ancient world, and its wealth was legendary.
